Her parents separated when she was 12. A year later, she went on to study at prominent HB Studios in New York City, as well as taking dance and ballet classes at Joffrey and Ailey schools. When the time came for her to choose a college, Yancy went to the well known Sarah Lawrence College where she did her B.A. in Liberal Arts. She earned a 3.8 GPA and received a Griggs Scholarship.
